The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) has issued a guidance that warns healthcare providers about accessing patient health records remotely. CMS notes in the advisory a number of security incidents from laptops and other electronic devices being misplaced, lost, or stolen. The guidance advises providers about potential risks and possible risk management strategies to protect electronic health information. CMS advises entities covered by HIPAA to be extremely cautious about allowing the offsite use of, or access to, this health information.
