Did you know that 50 milliseconds are all it takes to make a first impression of a website? How about first impressions in senior living? Scenario one: You enter a senior living community lobby, and no one is at the reception desk. The office doors are closed, and the notices posted on the entrance are taped, tattered, and crooked. Staff are milling around but do not make eye contact with you.
Second scenario: You enter the lobby of a senior living community, music is playing softly, and a real, live receptionist is sitting at the front desk chatting with a resident. They both turn and smile, ask how they can help you, and the receptionist stands up to walk you to where you need to go! Which scenario would you prefer if you were “shopping” for care for a loved one?
The value of first impressions in senior living should not be underestimated! It doesn’t take a lot of effort to make a positive first impression. Training your staff on the importance of greeting guests, making eye contact, putting them at ease, and assisting them as needed can make all the difference. Remember, many people who walk through your front door may be in a difficult situation, and your support goes a long way in helping them while giving a positive impression of your center.
Census is important, and positive relationships can assist in building census, but remember, your job doesn’t stop there! Keep it going: Share your smile, encourage conversation with guests, and ensure quality care is provided every day for every resident. 50 milliseconds—maybe the most important! Stay well and stay informed!
