Ever think you’d see the day when a flu vaccine showed up at your front door? With FluMist home delivery, that day is here.
AstraZeneca just announced FluMist Home—the first-ever at-home delivery service for FLUMIST (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal). Adults 18 and older can visit www.FluMist.com to learn more and place an order. The process includes a medical screening questionnaire, which is reviewed by a licensed healthcare provider. If eligible, and once insurance is verified, the FLUMIST will be prescribed and shipped right to the individual’s home—along with clear instructions on administration, storage, and disposal.
The 2025–2026 FluMist formula includes three weakened flu virus strains: A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and a B strain from the B/Victoria lineage. According to public health guidance, this live-virus nasal spray is approved for people ages 2 through 49, but not for those over 49. You can find more about the vaccine’s formulation and side effects through this Drugs.com FluMist info page or refer to the CDC’s 2025–2026 influenza season update.
Now here’s where things get tricky for senior living communities. If your center requires annual flu vaccines for employees, how do you verify someone actually used FluMist if they did it at home? Sure, they can bring in a shipping confirmation or prescription receipt, but did they really administer it? That’s a gray area—and the only thing you may have to rely on is the honor system.
So what can you do? Education, education, education. Remind staff that they’re caring for frail, medically complex residents—many of whom could face life-threatening complications from the flu. Reinforce why this matters. Not just because it’s policy, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Personally, I wouldn’t want that kind of risk on my conscience. Would you?
