Java and Longevity

Hooray! Finally! I guess if you wait long enough good things CAN happen! In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers evaluated the association of sugar-sweetened, artificially sweetened, and unsweetened coffee with all-cause mortality. Of course, this publication came out AFTER I decided to give up my hazelnut Coffee Mate!

In previous studies, they did not distinguish between sweetened coffee and unsweetened coffee consumption. What was interesting was that 55.4% of the participants drank coffee without sweeteners while about 45.5% of coffee drinkers used sugar or other forms of sweeteners. After considering other factors that might impact the risk of death, like lifestyle choices, the coffee drinkers were significantly less likely to die from any cause including cardiovascular disease and/or cancer than those who didn’t drink any coffee.

I think this is great news for all of us who enjoy our java, anyway you like it, drink up. That said, as the researcher wrote “drink up, but it would be prudent to avoid too many caramel macchiatos while more evidence brews”! Hmmm, now they need to study the effects of bacon, whether crispy or soft is healthier, my guess is I won’t win that one but what the heck, maybe it is worth investigating! Stay the course, stay informed and stay well!
