As we get through the holidays, new and virulent variants of the COVID-19 virus are striking all over the world. Additionally, influenza is beginning to show up and appears to be very contagious and debilitating. So, what are we to do? How do we enjoy our families, while staying safe? According to the CDC, vaccination is the only way to protect yourself and those you love.

That said, many communities, retailers, offices, schools, etc. are again, mandating or highly encouraging the use of masks indoors. That brings us to another concern, how do you manage mask-wearing with family and friends when sharing a smile has such a huge impact on our lives? A study published in JAMA network looked at the benefits of wearing transparent masks with interesting results!

What the researchers found was that widespread mask-wearing impairs non-verbal communication and the ability to convey emotions (smiles). Transparent masks have the potential to improve verbal communication with loved ones while encouraging non-verbal communication as well. Think of the smiles you can share (or the pouts), think of improved communication with your loved ones, and maybe take a step closer to what our holidays used to be like. Have a safe and happy holiday, stay well, stay informed, and stay tuned!
