Remember the days when a sore throat and sniffle meant a trip to the doctor and, more often than not, a shot in the behind? I sure do. Back then, antibiotic awareness in senior living or anywhere else wasn’t even a thought. If the doctor prescribed it, we took it, no questions asked.
That thinking still lingers. In fact, a recent global study revealed that only 42.1% of participants understood that antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. According to this article from Clinical Microbiology and Infection, that misunderstanding fuels the ongoing misuse of antibiotics, especially during cold and flu season. The issue goes far beyond minor ailments. Antibiotic resistance is now linked to more than 1.14 million deaths globally each year. That number is as staggering as it is preventable.
Although antibiotic stewardship campaigns have gained traction, real-world understanding hasn’t kept pace. As highlighted in a CIDRAP review, there’s still a critical knowledge gap when it comes to responsible antibiotic use. That’s why antibiotic awareness in senior living needs to be a conversation we revisit often, especially during flu season.
So, what can we do in our communities? First, take time to talk with your residents, their families, and your staff about the difference between viral and bacterial infections. Next, keep track of any infections that arise and review treatment plans closely. If there’s ever a question about an antibiotic order, bring it up with your medical director. A quick conversation could mean a better outcome for a resident and one less step toward resistance.
Flu season might be short, but its impact can linger. Let’s use this time to reinforce the message that antibiotics aren’t cure-alls, and their overuse comes at a cost.
Stay well and stay informed!
